Press Releases PDSI PRESENTS PURPLE DIAMOND™

Loropetalum chinensis ‘Shang-hi’ PPIP

Among the sea of loropetalum varieties used in landscapes today, PDSI’s new Purple Diamond™ is a rare jewel.

Originally introduced last year as Purple Haze, Purple Diamond is a dense, rounded shrub that boasts some of the most intense purple foliage color on the market. In addition to the brilliant purple hue on both sides of the leaves, Purple Diamond’s unique characteristics include a maximum height of five feet, which minimizes trimming maintenance compared to other loropetalums available today.

Its blooms—bundles of vivid threadlike fuchsia filaments—arrive in the spring, appearing brighter than the foliage itself and creating a beautiful contrast. Hardy in USDA zones 7 to 9, Purple Diamond’s leaves are sun stress-tolerant, having been tested for more than five years at PDSI’s research facilities.

The horticultural innovators that produced the revolutionary Encore Azalea, Plant Development Services Inc., have continued to shape the way new, relevant plants reach the consumer. In addition to the Encore Azalea line, PDSI has introduced over 50 patented plants and/or brands.
